“Success is not the destination, but rather the learnings we take from our journey through life…”

Terrific Temp

Outstanding performance from our temps doesn’t go unnoticed. We truly appreciate, and like to therefore acknowledge the great work they are doing for us.

Our September Temp of the Month award goes to Joseph Chow, the feedback from his colleagues is great with them saying, “He is amazing! I can’t believe how good he is!” and they have extended his contract for another month! So congratulations to Joseph.

Joseph is pictured here whilst on assignment at Adstream. He gets $100 from a store of his choice.

So what does it take to be next month’s Terrific Temp? Here are some quotes from previous Award Winning nominations:

“… friendly, learns fast and nothing is too much trouble.”
“…hasn't taken a day off, has a great attitude and has proved to be adaptable and willing to do other duties outside the assignment.”
“…is reliable, hardworking, always upbeat, learns fast and is happy to go the extra mile!”

How to get that job!

Your Cover Letter and Resume are your Passport & Photo ID – you need them to start the journey to your new career!

As you begin your job search journey you will visit the “Arrivals Gate” (email inbox) of many recruitment firms and companies.  At this stage you will be screened by ‘Passport Control Officers’  (Consultants/employers).  Getting through the “arrivals gate” is the first hurdle on the journey to a new career.  Here’s a few hints/tips to get your passport stamped so that you can continue on your journey.

Introducing… YOU!

There is a long standing debate amongst recruitment consultants and employers about whether a cover letter is essential for an electronic application.

This debate has arisen because too many job seekers use a template / regurgitated version of a cover letter for every job application.   As a result many consultants and employers will discard applications or “shelves” applications that appear to be a generic version sent out to the masses.

So if you’re looking for a competitive advantage that sets you apart from the masses right from the start – look no further than your Cover Letter!

  • It’s your first opportunity to gain a consultant’s/employer’s interest.
  • It’s your first chance to prove you’re the right candidate for the job.
  • This is your chance to entice the reader to review your resume – now!
  • This is your opportunity to set yourself apart and secure an interview.

Here’s a few helpful hints to consider when drafting your Cover Letter:

  1. Make sure you understand the requirements listed in the advertisement
  2. Address your letter/email to the correct person/company
  3. Do not repeat your entire resume – focus on a few key points
  • Introduction - introduce yourself and the role for which you are applying
  • Paragraph 2 - briefly describe your current role and/or studies
  • Paragraph 3 - show how your skills & strengths complement the role
  • Paragraph 4 - explain why you are interested in the role/industry
  • Closing        - confirm your availability for interview and contact details

4.   Use the same font as your resume
5.   Keep it simple, short & sweet – 1 page is enough
6.   Check your spelling and grammar – first impressions count

Sharing your journey…

‘Passport Control Officers’ (Consultants/Employers) rely on your resume to provide them with a concise account of your journey.  Including your education, work history, job related skills and interests will enable them to ‘stamp your passport’ (book an interview) or provide you with feedback on how to get through the ‘arrivals gate’ with your next application.

Here are a few tips on creating a winning Resume.

  • Avoid graphics and fonts that are hard to read
  • Ensure there is a logical sequence
  • Be precise with dates - list months and years
  • List your full contact details – email, mobile, home phone
  • Provide a brief paragraph to highlight your professional skills

Create a section for your WORK HISTORY

  • List each employer, job title and the dates of employment
  • Outline key responsibilities
  • Highlight achievements

Create a section for your COMPUTER SKILLS

  • List packages used and proficiency level
  • Provide results from any testing you have undertaken

Create a section for your EDUCATION

  • List any work based training you have completed
  • Outline any university qualifications you have received
  • Listing your final secondary qualification is optional

Include hobbies, sports and interests – they provide an insight into your personality and motivation.

  • Use the same font as your Cover Letter
  • Keep it simple, professional and current –  2-3 pages is enough
  • Check your spelling and grammar – first impressions count

By following these few simple guidelines you should have greater success at the “arrivals gate” for your next job application.  In next month’s newsletter we will be looking at the next step of the job search journey – “Working in Partnership” with your recruitment consultant to secure your dream job!

In the meanwhile, best of luck on your travels.. and remember, if you need any assistance along the way – give Kristy a call!

Stories of success

As this newsletter “goes to press” our featured candidate is counting down the moments until she starts her new career.

On 5th September Osa came into our lives at Beaumont.  From the moment we first spoke with her – she impressed us with her friendly outgoing personality and her dedication and commitment to her job seeking journey.

Osa arrived from Nigeria in 2002 and had been working in an accounts role. Settling into a new country is a daunting challenge for anyone, but Osa “took this in her stride”.  Recently Osa decided that she was ready for the next step in her career.

Initially Osa was keen to move into a new industry. This is a daunting prospect for anyone, but once again Osa “took this in her stride”.  She worked closely with her consultant, Sian, to identify industries and positions that would complement her accounts skills.  Over a period of three weeks Osa attended a number of interviews with employers only to receive a “No” answer.

With amazing spirit and determination, Osa viewed these ‘rejections’ as a learning opportunity on her journey and turned to her consultant for support, coaching and feedback to improve her chances of success with her next application.

Through open and honest communication Sian and Osa were able to identify a company that could provide Osa with variety and career development, whilst utlising  her accounts skills.

The Beaumont Team would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Osa on securing her new role.  We celebrate her strength and dedication!  She is a true example of someone who views life as a journey rather than a destination.

Fee is off travelling so we’d love you to meet Blake

We have a warm welcome and a fond farewell this month.

Felicity, who has been our fabulous Receptionist at Beaumont for quite some time, is leaving us for more exotic locations as she is off traveling the globe, so as we say bon voyage to Fee, we say a huge welcome to Blake Mason who will be the new face and voice of the company. I’m sure some of you will be speaking to him soon and finding out what a quality chap he is.

Last laugh

The office happenings….

Quote from a recent meeting: "We are going to continue having these meetings, everyday, until I find out why no work is getting done".

Quote from the Boss... "I didn't say it was your fault. I said I was going to blame it on you."

A motivational sign at work: The beatings will continue until morale improves.

My Boss said to me " What you see as a glass ceiling, I see as a protective barrier.

I thought my Boss was an idiot, and quit, to work for myself. My new Boss is an idiot, too ... but at least I respect him.

HR Manager to job candidate "I see you've had no computer training. Although that qualifies you for upper management, it means you're under-qualified for our entry level positions."

Quote from telephone inquiry "We're only hiring one summer intern this year and we won't start interviewing candidates for that position until the Boss' daughter finishes her summer classes.
