Tips on Reference Checking

Reference checking is such an important part of the recruitment process, if done properly, it is another tool which helps us assess if the candidate is the right fit for the job.  Here are a few tips to help you get the best out of your reference checks.

  • Check who the referee is, is there any point asking one of the candidates colleagues about their work? Make sure you're speaking to the person who the candidate worked for, and double check their position by calling HR, especially if the contact details are a mobile phone.
  • The privacy laws allow candidates to access reference details, so be careful when giving references that the information you are giving is accurate and factual, and be aware when taking references that candidates can access them.
  • Always get written consent from the candidate to take references, especially if you are taking a reference from a current employer.
  • Have pre-prepared questions to ask and make sure those questions are relevant to the role the candidate has applied for and the requirements of the job.
  • Ask the same reference questions for all candidates for a particular role, only then can you compare candidates fairly and accurately.
  • Take telephone references rather than written references whenever you can, that way you can dig deep and follow up vague or half hearted answers.
  • You can also ask behavioural questions in a reference check just like you do in an interview situation.
  • If you get one bad one, don't necessarily stop there, the rest could be glowing!
  • Remember the references shouldn't be a single reason to hire or not hire, they're just another tool in your toolbox!

Temp of the Month

We have so many fabulous temps working for us and we regularly receive great feedback from the companies that we work with, so we acknowledge outstanding performance with our "Temp of the Month award".

Our September award goes to Emma Hampton who is working at Challenger.  Emma has received consistently excellent feedback, HR rated her as “the best temp ever”. Well done Emma.

Louise Guilfoyle our Office Support Consultant is pictured here giving Emma her certificate and $100 voucher.

Funny hobbies and interests

Collectively we must read though literally thousands of resumes each week and do we read some interesting stuff? (and some not so interesting stuff!).  Here are a few funnies we've collected recently that candidates have listed in their "Hobbies and Interests" section of their resumes.

  • Trashy magazines (got to be kidding!)
  • Righting novels (yes that is spelt with an R!)
  • I am a T.V. addict. I love my T.V. (and what about your skills…)
  • Contestant on Wheel Of Fortune 1998 (6 yrs ago! - maybe this resume is a bit outdated or nothing more interesting has happenend to them since then)
  • Fresh air (this candidate applied for an office based role)
  • Karaoke and the normal Friday after work alcohol sessions (party animal!)
  • Making clocks and picnic tables in many different shapes and sizes
  • Racing Grand Prix Midget race cars (whatever they are?)
  • Spending time with my girlfriend (aw…. how cute…)

Team Beaumont take to the Go-Karting track

Team Beaumont took to the track recently for a well-deserved team bonding event at Eastern Creek raceway (part of our work-hard / play-hard culture which the boss fully endorses...), and what an afternoon of fun we all had!

Confidence was a little lacking during the first few warm-up races, with the lads showing the girls the way. However, girl power overtook testosterone in a cloud of dust and fumes with the lap times falling as dramatically as the ego's became inflated, ready for the 15-lap final showdown.

None other than our very own Bridget Jones look-alike, Felicity the receptionist, took out the chequered flag. A close second was Lee, with Kath trailing in third.

Due to over-exertion in showing everyone how it was done during the first few races, a vindictive track official, and suspected tampering of my go-kart by Kath, I got the wooden spoon....yes beaten by no fewer than 7 girls...I won't mention that one of them (Leanne) has not even got her provisional license and can't legally drive cos that would just be too embarrassing....oops!

Anyway, it was a top day, and we strongly recommend it to anyone looking to bond their team, or inspire some friendly competition!

(Written by Neil Hanson, our Sales & Marketing Consultant, who can't drive as fast as the girls)

We're expanding again!
