October Temp of the Month

The "Temp of the Month award" acknowledges outstanding performance from the temps that are currently working for us.

Our October Temp of the Month award goes to Sarah Liebenberg who is working at Australian Retailers Association. Sarah has received consistently excellent feedback. She receives $100 vouchers from Myer. Well done Sarah.

Cover Letters

The first rule of cover letter etiquette is to send a cover letter -- always. It doesn't matter if the hiring manager didn't ask for it or you're too busy to write one. It's proper business etiquette to accompany a resume with a cover letter, and it gives you a wonderful opportunity to sell yourself for the position.

The cover letter should be a formal letter and you should address your letter to the person you are sending your application to (check spelling if you are unsure).

Start by expressing your interest in the position and mention where you saw it advertised. Use the covering letter to clearly point out why you should be considered for the position by taking the requirements from the advertisement and matching those to your own skills and experience. You can also outline why you would like to work for the company. State when you’ll be available for work and how the employer can reach you. Also mention that your resume is attached. In the last sentence, thank them for their time or consideration and say that you look forward to hearing from them.

When you’re finished writing your cover letter, proofread it carefully, use your spell check and get a friend to proofread it too. A good resume and cover letter won’t get you a job in themselves, but they will certainly help.

Cover letter No No’s

  • Unattractive Layout
Your cover letter should be professional. Try to avoid inappropriate stationary or fonts that are too fancy. Keep it simple and readable.
  • Don't Overuse "I"
The focus should be on how you meet an employer's needs. Avoid the perception of being self-centered by minimising your use of the word "I," especially at the beginning of your sentences.
  • Don't Use a Weak Opening
Job seekers frequently struggle with how to begin a cover letter. This often results in a feeble introduction lacking punch and failing to grab the reader's interest. Consider these examples:
    • Weak: Please consider me for your sales representative opening.
    • Better: Your need for a top-performing sales representative is an excellent match to my three-year history as a #1-ranked sales consultant.
  • Don't Make It Too Long
If your cover letter exceeds one page, you may be putting readers to sleep. Keep it concise but compelling, and be respectful of readers' time.
  • Don't Be Vague
If you're replying to an advertised opening, reference the specific job title in your cover letter. The person reading your letter may be reviewing hundreds of letters for dozens of different jobs. Make sure all the content in your letter supports how you will meet the employer's specific needs.
  • Don't Forget to Customise
If you're applying to a number of similar positions, chances are you're tweaking one letter and using it for multiple openings. That's fine, as long as you are customising each one. Don't forget to update the company, job and contact information -- if Mr. Jones is addressed as Mrs. Smith, he won't be impressed.
  • Finally – Don’t forget your resume!!!

Dancing With Delta

Fresh from being left broken-hearted by tennis bad boy Mark Philippoussis, (as well as suffering the embarrassment of being traded in for Paris Hilton) Delta Goodrem was evidently on the prowl at the Aria's after-party hosted by the exclusive Establishment nightclub.

The Daily Telegraph reported "Delta was seen canoodling and dancing with an elegant blond gentleman". Well, we can exclusively reveal the identity of the mystery blond gent of distinction, it was none other than Beaumont Consulting's very own Neil Hanson - A man of exquisite taste and discretion...it took him ages to finally admit his idea of dancing with Delta was drunkenly making eyes at her from 10 feet while avoiding the attention of her 6.9" bodyguard!

Neil was provided an 'all access' Aria's ticket courtesy of Time Life, who have appreciated Neil's assistance over the last year in recruiting a variety of call centre and sales and marketing staff. A great night was had by all, and while he failed to charm Delta, he did get talking to a variety of Australian Idol wannabees on the red carpet.  Go Neilos!

Joke of the Month

A man flying in a hot air balloon realises he is lost. He reduces his altitude and spots a man in a field down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts, "Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?"

The man below says, "Yes, you're in a hot air balloon, about 30 feet above this field."

"You must be an engineer," says the balloonist.

"I am. How did you know?"

"Everything you told me is technically correct, but it's of no use to anyone."

The man below says, "You must be in management."

"I am. But how did you know?"

"You don't know where you are, or where you're going, but you expect me to be able to help. You're in the same position you were before we met, but now it's my fault."
