Mentoring

To get ahead and climb the ladder in today's corporate world you need tenacity and a ruthless sense of ambition to push the competition out of the way. Ever heard this before? Well, believe it or not this way to the top is often rocky and short-lived.

The ruthless route to business success may be the common perception, but luckily in today's business world you'll find successful business people are increasingly willing to share their professional experiences with others by offering first-hand guidance and advice; the kind of learning textbooks just can't provide.

Successful people are generally willing to share their experiences to help nurture and develop other individuals interested and passionate about taking those next steps. However there are obstacles at times. With budgets stretched to the limit and time a rare commodity, formal mentoring programs may seem too difficult to get off the ground. If you're an aspiring mentee, don't let that stop you.

Many people think of mentoring as a structured programme or arrangement, it doesn't have to be hard. If you want to learn from a mentor, you need to take the initiative to seek the advice and wisdom of people you admire.

Ways to do this include:

  • Volunteer for projects that allow you to work together
  • Ask if you can 'shadow' them at work and see what they do
Pay close attention when you're around them, 'impromptu mentoring' can often be the most rewarding
  • Take them to lunch and ask them questions

Today's mentee isn't just a knowledge sponge; you need to actively initiate and participate in the mentoring process.

Shea (1994) defines mentoring as: "A developmental, caring, sharing, and helping relationship where one person invites time, know-how, and effort into enhancing another person's growth, knowledge, and skills and responds to critical needs in the life of that person in ways that prepare the individual for greater achievement in the future."

Career mentoring is a type of professional mentoring that mostly focuses on career related advice. However, we find many relationships enter a more personal realm and the most effective relationships occur when rapport is built and both parties enter a stage of familiarity and trust. Clear and sustained communication, rapport building and a positive attitude are all important components of achieving the most out of a mentoring relationship.

Beaumont does good!

Benin Benefit @ Melt - Wednesday 11 October 2006 - This month, one of our Beaumont girls got into the spirit of “vogue” by raising money for a community in Benin, West Africa. The night was a great success and over 200 guests attended the event; some of the Beaumont girls who didn’t partake in the fashion show itself came along and cheered for Emily, who volunteered to wear some of the clothes for the evening !!!!

12 Sydney based designers donated pieces from their current collection for the 10 volunteers to wear on the night, the outfits were auctioned off at the end of the night.

All proceeds from the ticket sales went to the Benin Benefit whose volunteers are working out in West Africa in a small community called Benin where they are helping to help build latrines and a well to provide water to help local families.

For more information on the Benin Benefit email kathryn.doyle@hccryde.syd.catholic.edu/au

Further afield, another charity that Beaumont people have been involved in recently is Baphumelele. This is located in the township of Khayelitsha (meaning “new home”), located 20 kilometres southeast of Cape Town. Initially an informal settlement in the late 1970s, Khayelitsha has grown into a community of over one million residents.

Khayelitsha is one of the most marginalised and poverty-stricken townships in South Africa. Many residents live in self-constructed wooden or corrugated tin shacks, without access to clean water, electricity, or sanitation. Basic education and health care facilities are lacking. The unemployment rate in Khayelitsha officially stands at a staggering 50%; in reality, the figure is unfortunately higher.

Khayelitsha has one of the highest incidences of HIV/Aids infection in all of South Africa – this in a country that the United Nations Aids Foundation recognizes as having the highest HIV/Aids rates globally.

Reliable estimates suggest there are as many as 14,000 orphans in Khayelitsha, the majority as a result of the Aids pandemic. Whilst some 27% of adults are HIV positive, amongst expectant mothers this figure may be as high as 40%.

A large part of Baphumelele's ongoing income is from donations by many supporters, individuals, corporations, support groups, dedicated fundraisers and others.

We receive donations from many parts of the world including South Africa, North America, Europe and Australia.

Some of these donations are once-off, such as bequests and gifts; others are monthly, yearly or intermittent contributions. Some of the donations are very substantial; others are small amounts, but come from limited resources, and we are most grateful for all of them.

Each and every donation is used for Baphumelele and NO moneys are paid to trustees, volunteers, fundraisers or organizers of any description whatsoever.

Emily’s partner has spent 3 months working at his orphanage so if any of you are interested in hearing more about his experiences or to find out about volunteering please get in touch with Emily, at emily.wheeldon@beaumontconsulting.com.au.

Next month the Baphumelele website will be launched which is under construction by one of the volunteers, so in our next newsletter we will provide you with a link where you can find out more information.

Joke of the month

It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end to end, someone would be stupid enough to try and pass them.

Quote of the month
