Round Up For April

In April we said “goodbye” to Tara Robinson, Chatswood Branch Manager and “hello” to our old friend Rhonda Dunn who has stepped into Tara’s shoes whilst we search for a suitable replacement for Tara. Rhonda has previous experience of running Beaumont Consulting and we are happy for any excuse to welcome Rhonda back. Demand For Staff Continues To Grow

"The strength of the labour market has exceeded all expectations," said Mark Steyn, CEO Hudson Australia/New Zealand. "Only a few months ago, unemployment was forecast to continue rising until mid-2010. It is now apparent that unemployment has already peaked and is generally trending downwards, despite a slight 0.1pp rise in February. The 52,000 jobs created in January were three times market forecasts and represented the largest monthly increase since December 2006."

This is the fourth consecutive quarter in which Hudson has measured rising confidence, and the third in which the vast majority of industries surveyed have recorded positive sentiment.

NSW sentiment is up by three percentage points to 30.2 per cent - the highest level since mid 2008. The construction/property/engineering, financial services/insurance and healthcare sectors are leading the charge;

Job advertisements improved modestly in March, building on the previous month's big jump, as employers showed continued demand for new staff.

The total number of jobs advertised edged up 1.8 per cent last month to 162,692, led by online ads, following a 19.1 per cent surge in February, ANZ said in its monthly survey.

Today's job ads may on the margin bolster the case for another interest rate rise as the economy continues to build momentum after last year's slowdown. The Reserve Bank's board is meeting today, with a rates verdict due at 2.30pm, east cost time.

'In the near term, the forward indicators continue to point to more employment growth through 2010, although the pace of growth will vary and is likely to be slower than in the jobs boom seen over the past six months,' said ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan.

'The ANZ (and other) job ads surveys continue to improve, business investment and construction are regrouping, and business sentiment and expectations remain relatively strong.'

Internet job ads increased by 2 per cent to 152,843 in March, while newspaper job ads eased 1 per cent to 9,849, seasonally adjusted.

'Although only recording modest growth in March, the latest results should be regarded as very strong following the recorded 19.1 per cent jump in the ANZ Job Advertisements series in February.'

'This month's continuation in job ads growth suggests labour demand is strengthening in early 2010 and confirms the rapid improvement in economic conditions in Australia over the past six months.'

The Importance Of Values

It is natural, when thinking about a career change, to consider your skills and experience and ask yourself what other jobs are open to you. But in fact it is neither skills nor experience which will determine whether your new career will be one that you enjoy. The most important factor to take into account in a career change is your values.

Your values are the things that matter to you in life; the things that determine your view of your world, your beliefs and attitudes. Values can range from big things — such as a belief in universal justice to small things; a belief that men should hold the door open for women. The important things about values in a career is that if the job you do is in line with your values then you will consider that job valuable. If the job clashes with your values then you will almost certainly be unhappy at work.

For example, if one of your overriding working values is to create an affluent lifestyle for yourself then you will not be happy in a job where the chances of earning a high salary are slim. If however the thing that matters most to you is to contribute to making the world a better place, then the consequences of the work you do are likely to matter much more to you than how much you earn.

Equally, if you believe that people should respect each other then an aggressive, rude working environment is likely to give you a values clash. If however you believe in the importance of winning, of having a competitive approach to life, then you may find that a tough workplace culture is exactly what you want.

Of course you need to be sure that you have the skills to perform well in your career. Your skills will define the broad areas of work that are open to you. They will give you a range of possibilities. But your values will determine exactly which careers, and which jobs will be right for you within that range.
