Why working for one agency can benefit you.

By Trevor Robinson

Many candidates when looking for a new career opportunity think that using more agencies = more opportunities for them. However after 17 years in the recruitment business I believe this is not necessarily the best option and that working exclusively with one agency can prove more advantageous to you.

Let’s review the start of the process: you look on Seek and see numerous agencies advertising the type of position you are looking for but they are all worded slightly differently so you can’t be truly sure that they are not recruiting for the same company. You then book appointments with 3 agencies on different days and during the interviews you find that they are all working for the same client and there was really only one opportunity you have interviewed for.

Now that you’ve registered with 3 agencies, they are all obliged to contact you each time they want to represent you for a particular position and to make sure that other agencies haven’t already sent your resume for that vacancy. This means you might get 3 interruptions that day at work to discuss the same role and you have to keep a record of where your resume is going and who sent it. Add to the equation that each agency has a number of consultants specialising in financial markets, and the number of daily interruptions can increase.

When I meet a candidate I know is highly marketable I encourage them to work with me exclusively for a specified time period (say 4 – 8 weeks) to allow me time to explore the market proactively and secure them the right role. We would initially agree on a strategy of which companies they are keen to work for and that I think would be interested in the skills they have to offer. Once this is agreed, I will then approach my clients with an exclusive candidate that they can only obtain through me. Compare this situation to the candidate who has already gone to 10 agencies, is unsure which consultant has sent their resume to which company and has not built a strong relationship with any of the 10 firms by spreading themselves too thin.

Think of how this benefits you?

  • You do not need to keep a track of where your resume goes now because one consultancy has all that information for you.
  • The partnership approach also means we can get a better sense of which work cultures you do / do not enjoy and by considering feedback from you and our client’s
  • We can ensure you are well positioned to snap up that ideal role when it comes along.
  • We will ensure we negotiate the best package for you with our client as we are more aware of your ideal choice and needs and you’re no longer feeling pressured by having to talk with different consultants about the 2 or 3 job offers you have. Everybody wins.

So do think more about your strategy when you are looking to change job. Decide if you want to be seen as a commodity that’s widely available or an individual who cares enough about their next move to put a plan together.

Experience or Study?

According to a survey by Onetest, employers and hiring managers rate life and work experience as more important than a university degree.

The survey found the following qualities as more important than a university qualification:

  • ability to learn things quickly;
  • demonstration of creativity;
  • display of leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • employee job preference matches the job; and
  • good cultural fit.

This highlights the importance of cultural fit.   "Choosing them just because they have the right degree and then subsequently losing them because they're not the right fit can cost a company up to $25,000 per placement. That is a high price to pay." Said Steven Dahl, Onetest’s Managing Director.

Office Workers need to move more

Don’t sit at your computer for too long without a break if you want to protect yourself from the risk of blood clots.

A study by the Medical Research Institute in New Zealand has found that about a third of patients admitted to hospital with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) were office workers who spent hours at a computer. DVT is the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, most commonly in the legs. The clots can travel to the heart, lungs or brain, causing chest pain, breathlessness or possible death from a heart attack or stroke.

Lead researcher Professor Richard Beasley says some office workers who developed clots sat at their screens for 14 hours a day. "Some of them were going three to four hours at a time without getting up.”

Taking regular breaks, every hour, to go for a walk or even do some stretches, is important to both physical health and mental health.
