Demand For Staff Continues To Grow

"The strength of the labour market has exceeded all expectations," said Mark Steyn, CEO Hudson Australia/New Zealand. "Only a few months ago, unemployment was forecast to continue rising until mid-2010. It is now apparent that unemployment has already peaked and is generally trending downwards, despite a slight 0.1pp rise in February. The 52,000 jobs created in January were three times market forecasts and represented the largest monthly increase since December 2006."

This is the fourth consecutive quarter in which Hudson has measured rising confidence, and the third in which the vast majority of industries surveyed have recorded positive sentiment.

NSW sentiment is up by three percentage points to 30.2 per cent - the highest level since mid 2008. The construction/property/engineering, financial services/insurance and healthcare sectors are leading the charge;

Job advertisements improved modestly in March, building on the previous month's big jump, as employers showed continued demand for new staff.

The total number of jobs advertised edged up 1.8 per cent last month to 162,692, led by online ads, following a 19.1 per cent surge in February, ANZ said in its monthly survey.

Today's job ads may on the margin bolster the case for another interest rate rise as the economy continues to build momentum after last year's slowdown. The Reserve Bank's board is meeting today, with a rates verdict due at 2.30pm, east cost time.

'In the near term, the forward indicators continue to point to more employment growth through 2010, although the pace of growth will vary and is likely to be slower than in the jobs boom seen over the past six months,' said ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan.

'The ANZ (and other) job ads surveys continue to improve, business investment and construction are regrouping, and business sentiment and expectations remain relatively strong.'

Internet job ads increased by 2 per cent to 152,843 in March, while newspaper job ads eased 1 per cent to 9,849, seasonally adjusted.

'Although only recording modest growth in March, the latest results should be regarded as very strong following the recorded 19.1 per cent jump in the ANZ Job Advertisements series in February.'

'This month's continuation in job ads growth suggests labour demand is strengthening in early 2010 and confirms the rapid improvement in economic conditions in Australia over the past six months.'

lie

The top nine CV lies to look out for

Any claim at all on a CV could be a lie, but Hiring Manager’s should scrutinise nine particular areas to avoid being duped, according to organisational psychologist Joshua Wood.

The vital parts to pay close attention to, he says, are:
1. the importance of the role and responsibilities - are they inflated?
2. the candidate's achievements - are they embellished?
3. the reason given for leaving the company - does it mask poor performance, or a conflict situation?
4. tenure - has it been increased to remove gaps?
5. staff managed - did the candidate directly manage them? Was this in an acting capacity only?
6. revenue brought in or financial benefits - has the candidate exaggerated these to make herself appear more successful?
7. certification or degree - did the candidate complete this, or fail, or drop out? Has it been conferred yet?
8. academic dates - has the candidate changed these to cover failed or repeated subjects?
9. previous remuneration - has this candidate bumped it up a little in order to get a bigger salary this time?
Wood, of Adaps, says that on top of the above, recruiters should be on the lookout for embellishments or "flourishes" generally.

"My favourite example of CV embellishment was given to me from a fellow recruiter," he says. "The candidate had listed himself as the director of a national community service organisation. In interview, after a long series of probing questions, it turned out that the candidate's organisation amounted to him and his sister moving some boxes from the garage for an elderly lady next door... once!"

Subtleties in the language the candidate uses can hint at embellishments, he says.

For example, did the candidate do the whole lot, or "initiate the project"? Did they make important decisions or did they "research the issue", "analyse the problem" or "make recommendations"? Did they work with other employees as opposed to "managing" or "supervising" them?

desperate

Don't Let Your Desperation For Talent Cloud Your Judgement

We’ve all been there. Empty seats and then the perfect candidate turns up for interview, smartly dressed, polished presentation. There’s a small doubt in your mind but the positives far outweigh this and anyway, you haven’t seen any other CVs even close to your needs for weeks.

And then they turn up on day one ….oh dear!

With the competition getting tougher and tougher for our clients you need to make sure you have the ability to identify the correct aptitude and behavioural skills to make sure your new member of staff is a perfect fit for your team and not just someone to fill a seat and hit your target.

At Beaumont Consulting we are continuing to offer our complimentary training session, Recruitment & Selection Essentials. The half day recruitment and training program is free to all our clients.  Key topics include:

• Identifying the correct criteria for selection
• Narrowing the gap between company expectation and candidate market
• Effective interview techniques
• Making completely objective selection decisions
• Differentiating your company and the role from your competitors
• Salary negotiations
• The importance of feedback
• Induction essentials

This program has been especially formulated with our clients in mind, and is tailored to the local employment market. Aside from an informative training session, you will also take away an information pack to support your recruitment activity on an ongoing basis.

If you are interested in attending our complimentary Recruitment & Selection Essentials half day course, please email Patricia Leech or call us on (02) 9279 2777.

“Suzie has been a welcomed addition to the EFT Acquiring business and it is without doubt her work ethic, attention to detail and cheery disposition that are her standouts.
