New Faces

In May we welcomed Nicole Glasgow to the North Shore Office.  Nicole is covering resourcing and admin for the lovely Janine H while she is overseas on holiday (lucky ducky!).  Once Janine returns, Nicole will move into a trainee Consultant position.   We know you will enjoy working with her as much as we do!

A good deed indeed!

Tara, our wonderful manager of the Chatswood Branch has recently decided to join an organised trek with the Child Welfare Scheme (UK based charity). The trek is for 20 days in November and will be a very challenging climb to Everest Base Camp in Nepal! She will be trading in her well-earned days of holiday for basic accommodation, altitude sickness, freezing temperatures and long-drop toilets!!

Tara will be raising money for CWS's projects in Nepal so if you would like to support Tara in her quest you can make any donations at: http://www.justgiving.com/tara-t

We are also selling beautiful handmade earrings, made by our very own MD, Nikki Beaumont, with all profits supporting Tara's Trek.  If you are interested, we have a beautiful display in our reception, so pop in and have a look, they are $10 each, so good value for a good charity!

Move to axe job placement will hurt job seekers

The RCSA (Recruiting & Consulting Services Association) is ‘dismayed’ at the Governments move to axe the Job Placement License Scheme. The RCSA has said that the removal of the scheme will affect job seekers dramatically, saying it will severely reduce job seeker’s access to a broad range of employment opportunities.

CEO of RCSA MS Julie Mills has said “The Government needs to recognise the function of getting someone work ready and the function of placing them in a role are two very different skill sets. As professional recruiters they know where the jobs are”.

The government has justified their actions due to the current change in labour market and to be financially responsible. The cancellation of the scheme will commence from the 1st of July 2009. ort

Candidate shortage; biggest issue facing recruiters

A survey conducted by the Australian Institute of Management discovered that the top ten hardest jobs to fill are engineers, trades and nurses. The survey is in effect with the skills shortages.

According to the CEO of RCSA (Recruitment & Consulting Services Association), recruiters are tapping into untouched sources to fill the demand for skilled workers such as parents returning to work, people with disabilities, older workers and migrants.

Rejected Offers?

Many managers face the candidate process only to be turned down by a potential employee in the final stages of the staffing process.

The process of recruiting a potential employee can be long and daunting. Hiring managers should be prepared in advance in order to maintain interest from potential employees. By doing this it can also improve the candidate experience. Things to consider should include:

  • Knowledge of pay rates and what the company is prepared to offer.
  • Know what extras/incentives can be offered.
  • Decide on a prompt start date so there is not too much gap between the candidates notice period and commencement.
  • Plan a complete induction, so your candidate is impressed with the organisation of the training period.

EEO & the Law

Organisations have the right to choose the best possible candidate to fill open positions. However this right is governed by legislation.

Discrimination is a concern with regards to EEO, and anti-discrimination laws have been created to avoid it. Current Federal and State laws apply to discrimination in employment and all employers are obliged to comply with the laws.

How to avoid discrimination in candidate selection:

  • All applicants should be considered against the same objective criteria
  • No assumptions are to be made about the working patterns of groups that would automatically exclude them
  • All information should be distributed equally
  • Applicants are informed of all decisions once made
  • Applicants are not interviewed in an unfair manner that could be based on race, colour, sex or disability.

Child Care Incentives

The Budget released from the treasurer Wayne Swan has proposed Child care incentives encouraging people to go back to work in order to aid the skills shortage.

Child care incentives come in two forms
1. Child Care Benefit
2. Child Care Rebate

The Child care benefit will increase by 10% and it covers the cost for approved child care services and registered carers.

The rebate covers 30% of your out of pocket child care expenses for approved child care.

This positive step forward in child care allows for stay-at-home mums and dads the choice to go back to work.
