Temp of the month

Outstanding performance from our temps doesn’t go unnoticed. We truly appreciate, and like to therefore acknowledge the great work they are doing for us.

Our July Temp of the Month award goes to Ruari Murphy. Ruari is achieving excellent results in his current role at Cellhire. He is pro-active, punctual, has been creating some good leads for the company, and is generally being a superstar.

Ruari is pictured here whilst on assignment at Cellhire. He gets $100 from a store of his choice. Well done Ruari.

Quitting with style

OK, so last month we showed you “How to Make a Pay Rise Pitch”, you followed the advice, got the pay rise and still you’re not happy at work?  So, you decide to resign, but how do you do it?  What’s the best way?  Of course we’ve all felt at some time or another that we’d like to march in to our boss’s office, slam our resignation letter on his (or her) huge desk and tell them exactly what’s wrong with their company.  But is it really the sensible thing to do?  Here are a few things to consider before making your mind up.

Is leaving the only option?  Is it the company or just the position you’re not happy with?  Many employers would rather move or progress someone internally than lose a good employee.  Have a chat to HR and explore the opportunities that can be had from within.

Choose a future referee!  Find someone in your business who would make a good referee.  It has to be someone who you’ve had a good and extended working relationship with (ideally someone whom you reported to).  Check that they’re happy with this, that they can honestly comment on your working habits and fully understand why you’re moving on.

Get what you’re owed!  Ok, this is slightly calculating, but make sure you know how much annual leave, long service leave or bonus (if applicable) is owing to you before you make it known that you’re leaving.  It’s so much easier to find this out whilst you’re still there.

Leave a tidy desk!  Make sure that you finalise as much of your work as you can before you leave.  Anything that can’t be completed in time must be comprehensively handed over to your supervisor or even your successor in good time. Do not leave unfinished work as the final impression in your referee’s mind!

Don’t burn your bridges!  It may provide some short term satisfaction, but it’s only going to come back and bite you in the bum.  Just like you, people leave, and they move on to (hopefully) bigger and better things.  You could work alongside the exact same people in the future.  You could even end up returning to the same company yourself!

If you are looking to leave your current employer, make sure it’s for the right reasons, make sure it’s absolutely necessary, do it with a least a modicum of dignity and above all, give us a call first!

Top 5 Reasons why They Don’t Like You at Work

These are meant to be a little light hearted, but then again, they do say that many a true word is said in jest…..

1. Chains of Love
Are you never around because you're always out on a "smoke break?" Limit your puffs to standard break times.

2. Workaholic Wannabe
Do you mosey in late, take extra long lunches, and don't really start to roll-up your sleeves and dig into some serious work until about 2 p.m.? Then, do you make sure everyone sees you working past 5 p.m.? Well you're not impressing anyone; rather you're annoying those who have already put in a full day before you even get warmed up.

3. You gotta see the ba-a-aby!
Related to the yadda-yadda-yadda talker is the baby babbler who incessantly gushes about his/her children. Only family and close friends should be privy to details about every syllable uttered, step taken or nappies dirtied. It's wonderful that you love your baby, just don't make it your only topic of conversation.

4. What's that on your nose?
Do you constantly follow your boss around, laugh at all his/her jokes and drop their name in countless conversations? If so, then you are a suck-up. Working in an office does require a certain amount of "schmoozing" the boss, but you don't have to tie yourself up in a pretzel to impress them while alienating everyone else in the office.

5. Big Mouth
Are your phone conversations loud enough to be from the speakerphone even though they're not? Dial down the volume to keep the peace.

Background checks on the rise………honesty is the best policy!

Here at Beaumont Consulting we are noticing a rapid increase in clients utilising pre-employment screening before progressing to the stage of formal offer of placement. Pre-employment screening involves prospective employers utilising the services of an external company to thoroughly cross-check all information gleaned throughout the recruitment process, including the cross referencing on what is on your resume compared with what you put on the application form. This is what happens!

1. Your passport, birth certificate or drivers license is sighted to verify you are indeed who you say you are and that you are legally able to live and work in Australia
2. Employment dates, job title, reason for leaving and salary are checked with HR or Payroll for all positions held over the last 5-10 years
3. Your references are checked verbally with at least 2 previous managers. Referees are then cross checked with reception or HR to ensure they are bona fide
4. A police check is conducted
5. A bankruptcy check is conducted
6. All academic transcripts are cited and cross checked with the relevant tertiary institution

We thought it best to advise you of this growing trend and to remind you that honesty really is the best policy throughout the recruitment process. Imagine the embarrassment of being caught out and worse still missing out on that ideal position!

Quote of the month

We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten. Don't let yourself be lulled into inaction. (Bill Gates)
