Candidate Tips for June - Do’s and Don’ts
Do call if you need to cancel your interview
If you need to cancel an interview or have been offered another role, make sure you call to advise. It only takes a minute and would be very much appreciated. You may not be interested in the position being offered at this stage, but you never know what the future may bring, a professional and polite candidate is one who will be remembered.
Don't have any gaps between roles on your resume
Have a read through your resume and check that you don't have any gaps between roles. If there are gaps, make a note to indicate why, e.g. Three months traveling to Japan and the UK July - Sep 2006.
Do think about your mobile phone message
Some mobile phone messages may be funny or cute to your friends, but may not be as appropriate to a prospective employer. It’s a good idea to change the David Attenborough or Paris Hilton message to a simpler version until you have found a new role.
Do turn off your mobile phone
When in an interview please make sure your phone is off or on silent and if it does ring, it’s best that you don't answer it, as it is inappropriate and could be frustrating for the person who is interviewing you.
Do visit the Beaumont Consulting website
We have put together a lot of useful information for job seekers, including some commonly asked interview questions to prepare you for the interview!
Do relax and enjoy
Remember, this is your chance to shine!
Love Harry Potter? Then you'll love this!
Phillip Pullman – ‘His Dark Materials – Northern Lights’
Phillip Pullman’s ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy is a wicked combination of Harry Potter meets The Lord of the Rings and should be enjoyed by kids and adults alike – no excuses! Having never heard of Phillip Pullman or His Dark Materials a friend who had somehow found out I had become engrossed in Harry Potter (after professing for 3 years that I would never read any of them EVER!) urged me to go out and buy Pullman for my next literary feast. Lucky for me I gave into my curiosity.
Lyra, a rogue and spirited child, lives in a society where ‘experimental theology’ is regarded as the true science; seemingly natural in a world where every individual shares the journey of his life with a visible daemon. An animal form which stays close, shares every intimacy and every thought is reflected in its form.
At Jordan College, Oxford, of long ago, Lyra enjoys a carefree existence as an orphan under the haphazard care of scholars and maids where she frolics with Roger the Kitchen Boy… until the Gobblers steal him in the night.
As more and more children begin to disappear without trace, coinciding with the arrival of the enchanting Mrs. Coulter, Lyra begins to fear that she is somehow responsible for their abduction and determines to uncover the truth.
As the quest ensues make way for Armored Bears, Snow Queens, horrendous experiments and the prophecy of which the witches speak uncovering Lyra as central to the fate of the universe.
If you listen closely you may detect some more adult themes and theological quandaries cleverly encrypted in Pullman’s prose. Don’t worry if you don’t. The magical universe Pullman has managed to dream up, all other considerations aside, is worth the adventure alone. You won’t be able to put this book down and I promise you will be at your local bookstore as quick as a flash in search of your next Pullman hit!
Next month: Phillip Pullman – ‘His Dark Materials – The Subtle Knife’
Status and Titles take a back seat!
According to an article by Linkme.com.au, Australians would rather date trades people than professional’s, like Doctors. Linkme.com.au surveyed 950 people and the results show the professions in order of desirability:
-
Carpenter
-
Tiler
-
Painter
-
Builder
-
Plumber
-
Banker
-
Doctor
-
Lawyer
-
Accountant
-
Psychiatrist
CEO of Linkme.com.au, Mr Campbell Sallabank believes that Australians are placing less emphasis on status and titles and are becoming more concerned with a better work / life balance, when “work is not impending upon personal time and the ability to live a healthier lifestyle free of the shackles of office life”
Sallabank says this might be a lesson for employers to perhaps offer benefits such as “Gym memberships, flexi days, shorter hours and a dog at work policy”

Restaurant Review
One of our temporary workers, has sent us in a review of the “World famous” Harry's Cafe de Wheels. Remember, we always welcome your contributions!
When I first moved to my new place in Woolloomooloo I saw the large caravan and I thought nothing of it, it was not until later that I heard that they sold pies there.
Seeing as I am not much of the fan of pies, it was filed on my to-do list; somewhere in between saving the world from Martian invasion and getting colonic irrigation.
However, when I was told that it is WORLD FAMOUS, that many FAMOUS people have bought pies there, I decided that maybe I should put it higher on my list, with the secret hope of course that maybe somebody famous would be there, recognise my potential, (which I think is quite obvious!), and shoot me off to my well deserved stardom.
So, I headed there after work one evening, the perfect time to go, as there was no queue. I could take my time to choose what to have, but more importantly, hunger would make me overlook both the price (which I assumed would be high) and any imperfections in the food.
Getting there, I ordered a Chilli Tiger. A beef pie with chilli and on top was mashed potatoes and mushy peas holding a serve of gravy. It looked and smelt great. And to my surprise, it tasted very, very nice. And to make it even better, it didn't cost me an arm and leg.
So overall, I was very impressed. My only quibble was there were no celebrities there wanting to shake my hand and ask for my Autograph, and that trying to cross the road while holding a pie in one hand and with a backpack on one shoulder can be quite a challenge.
My score: 3.14 / 5 (yes, it’s a math joke)
