March Temp of the Month

We appreciate and acknowledge outstanding performance from the amazing temps that are currently working for us.

Our March Temp of the Month award goes to Stephen Merrigan. Stephen has temped for both Australian National Credit Union and ING Bank with exceptional feedback. He is reliable, hardworking, always upbeat, learns fast and is happy to go the extra mile! What clinched it for him this month was turning up for work the morning after slicing his right index finger with 4 stitches. As it was a new assignment he didn't want to make a bad impression. And it was a data entry role!! What an absolute trooper!! Way to go Stephen!!

Stephen is pictured here with Kathryn, our Banking and Finance Manager whilst on assignment at ING Bank.

The First Steps to Applying for “that” Role

Responding by telephone

Before you make the call

  • Make a note of your strengths and accomplishments that match the position – you will be asked!
  • Have a copy of the advert in front of you – it is amazing how many people call yet don’t remember which position they are applying for or who they are supposed to be asking for.
  • Ensure you are able to speak freely.
  • Make yourself as contactable as possible by leaving alternate contact details and don’t forget to make a note of who will be calling you back – you don’t want to look disorganised!

During the call

  • Use your best ‘telephone voice’ – this is the first step in the interview process and first impressions do count!
  • Remember the Receptionist – They are the eyes and ears of company and they will certainly let the consultant know if someone is rude to them. Also remember that other people in the company often answer the phone, and it could always be the MD!
  • If the employer has returned your call, let them know if ‘now is not a good time to talk’ – you don’t want to sound evasive when they ask you questions!
  • Be prepared to answer questions about your background, educational qualifications and your reasons for wanting to leave your current role. Be honest, and remember - this is your first opportunity to talk about why you should get the job. Sell yourself!
  • Be honest about what you earn – or give a "ball-park" figure if you don’t feel comfortable revealing your exact salary at this stage.
  • Ask questions about the role – you never know, but it may not be what you are looking for, so find out as much as possible.

Sending a written application

  • Phone first! The more you know about the job, the more you will be able to "tailor" your covering application letter. So if the advert gives you an opportunity to call a contact person – do it!
  • Your covering letter must be original and relevant. Keep it concise and check spelling and grammar – remember that this document could be used to judge your written communication skills.
  • Summarise your strengths to match the job requirements. Explain why you want the job.
  • Address it to the right person.
  • Don’t forget to include your resume – but make sure it is up to date first!

A Quick Note About Email Etiquette

There is a tendency for email messages to be considered informal, often with little regard to spelling, grammar and formatting. Do not make this mistake! Either send out the email message as a proper application letter including the date, contact name and email address, or write it in a separate document and attach it to the message, explaining briefly in the email that a formal letter of application is attached.

Be aware of your return email address, particularly those like Yahoo! or Hotmail. What may be considered a funny address using nicknames, jokes or swear words would be very inappropriate and unprofessional if you use it to send a resume and job application.

Good Luck!!

Quote of the Month

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand - strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming WOO HOO - What a Ride!"

This months quote came from one of our lovely clients, who clearly lives by this theory….. (you know who you are Anne!)

And Finally...

Don't forget to have a look at this weeks vacancies.

We hope you have a great Easter, thank you and keep in touch
