Successful recruiting delivers better financial performance
At Beaumont Consulting we aim to find our clients the right candidate with minimal turn around time. Studies are showing that this has many positive outcomes. Global human capital consulting group, Watson Wyatt have found that employers who fill a position within two weeks and are able to hire their first choice candidate are more likely to financially outperform their competitors.
The research, which was the result of a comprehensive survey on the HR practices of 147 companies, has reaffirmed the link between financial performance and effective recruiting practices, with the level of shareholder returns dependant on successful hiring programs.
All companies included in the study employed 1,000 staff or more and generated a minimum revenue of $US100 million. Watson Wyatt ranked the companies according to total return to shareholders (TRS), which includes capital growth and dividends, over a three year period. It found employers that filled positions within two weeks had a 59% TRS (between 2002 and 2004), compared to 11% TRS for companies which took seven weeks or more to fill a vacancy.
It seems that it pays to hire your first choice candidate. Studies also showed that employers who made a successful hire from their first choice candidate (driven by employer branding) produced a three-year TRS of 44%, compared to 32% for companies which had to make two or more offers before hiring.
There are many factors which will determine finding the right candidate first time, such as the right recruitment agency, the right consultant who understands your business, the time you spend on the recruitment process and your skill in interviewing and search.
When thinking about hiring staff successfully think about how this can place you at a financial advantage over your competitors.
"An organisations first opportunity to increase value is effective recruiting," said Watson Wyatt global director Paul Platten.

The Job Interview
Reaching the end of a job interview, the human resources person asked a young graduate fresh out of UTS, "And what starting salary were you looking for?"
The graduate said, "In the neighborhood of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package."
The interviewer said, "Well, what would you say to a five-week vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching your retirement fund to 50% of your salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?"
The young engineer sat up straight and said, "Wow! Are you kidding?"
The interviewer replied, "Yeah, but you started it."
