Job fit or Culture Fit?
More and more we are seeing companies rethink their recruitment strategies towards attracting talent rather than filling the job.
Smart companies have realised that their people are their business and it’s simply not good enough just to fill a job with someone who’s done it before.
Do you want someone in your business who can just do the job, or can contribute towards the future of the company?
So next time you’re recruiting, think again about exactly what you’re looking for. Could you hire someone from outside your industry and what value could they bring to your organisation? Can you train basic skills and focus more on attitude and contribution? And can you really tell from a resume if the person is right culture fit or job fit?
Good luck!
Competition for Talent
The competition for talent in Australia, and globally, is getting tougher and is here to stay for a long time yet. There has been a significant shift in the balance of supply and demand for quality employees.
You might see that there are 91,000 jobs live on Seek today and only 50,000 potential employees have “eyeballed” Seek that day. Not quite enough candidates when you think that’s 1 candidate for every 2 jobs! How many of those have applied for your job and then how many are actually suitable?
One of the biggest challenges facing business leaders and companies today is the attraction and retention of talent.
Here’s some top tips to ensure your company attracts the top talent:
Educate your leaders – make sure that everyone who is involved in the hiring process, right up to the top, understands the current war for talent. Employees are no longer queuing at the door, you need to get smart and get strategic and get that message across loud and clear to the top.
Get with the current generation - the employees of today have a much stronger focus on me. They want to know what you can do for them. Ask yourself what your company has to offer and make sure it’s better then your competition. Why are you so special? Why would employees choose to work for you? Every day candidates come to us and say yes I’d like to work for that company, but they also say no I don’t want you to send my resume there. Make sure you’re on their hit list.
Grow your own – rather than just looking at the immediate short term, develop a recruitment strategy for the long term. What are you doing to bring in quality candidates and train them from the bottom up? Create your own pool of talent and nurture them to become your leaders of tomorrow.
Market your firm - it’s not good enough just to market your firm to your clients and potential clients. You need to be marketing to potential employees too! Without great employees you won’t be able to attract and retain great clients, so spend some of your marketing budget on your future.
How clean is your reputation? – Every single person who comes in to contact with your business is important. Consider that a bad experience during the recruitment process or interview might affect not just that candidates perception of your business, be sure they’ll tell their friends, which are often those very candidates you are trying to attract!
Improve your recruitment process – gone are the days for companies to sit on a resume for a week then take 3 weeks to interview and another week to make a decision. Candidates want a fast and clean recruitment process, it’s their first insight in to how efficient your company is and quite simply, you’re going to miss out on the best talent and be left with the ones your competition rejected.
Use a great recruitment agency, and just one! – Develop a relationship with a fabulous recruitment agency who knows and understands and supports your business. (click here for link to website of highly recommended agency ha ha).
If you are 100% loyal to your recruiter, they’ll be 100% loyal to you and you’ll get the top talent first. Have you ever considered that using 4 recruitment agencies to fill one role will often get you less than the best talent? With only 25% chance of filling the job, someone else will get the best candidates first and you’ll get what’s left!
Recommending someone wonderful
I’m sure we all know the value of getting a recommendation from someone who’s had first class service at a restaurant, or who’s used a real estate agent that’s knocked their socks off!
I’m sure some of you have even experienced a great recruitment agency that you’ve recommended to all your colleagues and friends…. (we lurve those referrals)
So we thought it might be useful to add in to our monthly newsletter some of our top recommendations each month.
Designate - as you may know we have now moved into beautiful new offices in 50 Margaret Street. We started with a big empty space and now have exclusively designed offices thanks to our architect Robert Brewer of Designate and his trusty team, especially the wonderful Wilbert! Thank you so much Designate for creating our office, your service has been outstanding and we couldn’t have asked for more.
A & N Relocations – helped us move, in lightning speed, quick and efficient and didn’t manage to break any of our wine glasses – phew! Thanks boys.
Nicholls Price – We have been using Nicholls Price as our IT providers for the past 12 months and they are sensational. We call them with all sorts of silly problems and questions, they are always there to take our call and fix us up immediately. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and they always get us up and running as quick as a flash. Since using Nicholls Price we have had a much more efficient IT system, I can’t recommend them enough. Well done guys.
Milsons Restaurant in Kirribilli - Kath our Financial Services Manager was taken there for her birthday dinner and reckons it was one of the best restaurants she’s ever been too, yummy!
Wine Recommendations – Prince of Orange Rose wine… available from all good bottle shops… about $20 a bottle. The Beaumont Estate wine is also extra special – we deliver a bottle of the Beaumont wine to all our candidates who are placed in perm positions. We are particularly proud to support the Beaumont Estate Vineyard, which is based in the Hunter Valley. The vineyard was established with the vision to build a respite for terminally ill children and a natural therapies centre. They are funding the project through their wine sales. To order Beaumont Estate wine you can call Michelle at the Vineyard on 0419 616 461.
We’d also like to hear your recommendations – email them to Debbie Jenkins our Office Manager

MD goes bush!
Our MD Nikki Beaumont is off to explore the mountain tops on a 4 week adventure in Peru. If anyone of you have seen the movie Touching the Void, well that’s exactly where Nikki is going (without Joe Simpson as he seems to have a bit of trouble getting back to base).
Nikki starts her trip with some charity work, helping to install solar lighting in some of the more remote villages in the Huayhuash region. Armed with bags full of pens, paper, books and childrens clothes (and a cuddly Wombat and Koala) Nikki will be distributing these to the children in the remotest villages. Nikki will then take 3 weeks to climb up to the dizzy heights of 18,500 feet, or 5,600 metres, about the height of Everest base camp. No showers, no running water, no toilets and just a tent, sounds like she's going to have a great time! Watch out for June's newsletter for news of her trip.
Quote of the month
I heard this quote at a breakfast I attended this morning and loved it! (Nikki B)
